Worthing…

Seagulls Chairs on a beach

I drove the A24 south today, it goes to Worthing. I found the pier cafe, where I could watch the elements in comfort, its really the cafe for the theatre on the pier, so it was quite empty apart from a considerable number of pensioners.

On the way back I stopped at Cissbury Ring, where I thought I’d missed the directions, only to realise that the directions were actually ‘up’, and any amount of up you did from any angle on the hill would land you in the ring. I didn’t find Pitt Rivers Pit, but then I didn’t look very hard.

And then on the way back from there, heading home along the A24, I suddenly found I couldn’t change gear any more. Seems my clutch is broken. So, my poor car, having valiantly gotten us all the way to France and back seems to have given up. I’ll have a phone around to see how much its going to cost to make it better, but I fear it is time for another one.

    • Thank you.

I got really lucky with the seagulls – there was a lot of wind and a little boy throwing bread at them, so they were all flying into the wind, hovering, waiting for the next piece of bread.

And the chairs were just sat on the beach, arranged as seen in the picture. There were some more, too, in various states of disrepair.

    • Thank you.

The AA sorted me out – they sent out a chap with a recovery truck to tow me home, he wasn’t an AA person, who would, I think, have had a look at the car rather than just putting it on the back of the lorry. I need to check whether its just the clutch cable, or the clutch itself. The guy who collected me thought it was the clutch, but reading about the cable and wear compensator I’m not confident of his analysis of it – he was an accident recovery specialist, not a mechanic, so he was more concerned with clearing the scene and taking vehicles where they needed to go.

But I can’t do anything with it until I’ve got a chance to look at it in daylight, which is unlikely to happen before the weekend.

  1. Thank you.

I suspect its the whole clutch, but if not that will likely need some care over the next few thousand miles anyway….
