A digital misfit

Welcome to eGovernment. Its a place where it takes hours to find the page you want, because the Tax people aren’t listed in the A-Z index under either Tax or Inland Revenue, they’ve reorganised into a different letter (they’re now Revenue and Customs), so noone can find their website.

Then, once you’ve found the site you want, you need to find the page you want. And /then/, having filled in the form I thought was the right one it didn’t confirm on the webpage but said I’d get a mail. The mail has just arrived, confirming *precisely* the opposite of what I thought I was doing.

No wonder our taxes are so high, someone must be laughing all the way to the bank ‘designing’ this dross. Bet EDS or Monday or someone are behind it all….

  1. Don’t really see how you can avoid people needing to write things down (unless you want people to use the same password/PIN for everything, which presumably you don’t.) For most people it’s not a problem remembering passwords etc. that you use regularly, but if you’ve got ones you only use every few months or so, how else are you supposed to remember them?

I’d have thought it was better to use reasonably strong passwords, and keep a note of them in a safe place (i.e. not on a Post-It stuck on to the front of your monitor). But I’ve been mulling over this problem for a while, and would be pleased to hear some expert opinions…

  2. Not sure writing stuff down is that bad an idea, especially for things you don’t use that often, its a question of how you do it.

  3. I went to the right site three times before I noticed it *was* the right site. I was looking for something slightly unusual which wasn’t obvious from the entry point. Hence going around and around.
