A digital misfit

Anyone got any recommendations for a bike shop in Cambridge? I’m after a decent quality entry level pushbike, plus lock and hat and lights, plus whatever else I need. Would probably prefer to go to a local independent shop rather than a big chain, but I’m not very bothered. Its been 10 years since I’ve ridden but it seems like a good idea to start again now.

  1. Chris’s Bikes have always been quite helpful.

    Chris’s Bikes 2 Thornton Way, Girton, Cambridge, CB3 0NJ, 01223276004.

  2. I got mine from a place near the big Co-op on Mill Road. They were helpful but make sure they tighten everything properly. Didnt coast much either.

Though if you have money to spare there is a place on Mitchums Corner/ Chesterton road near the bridge that will make them up for you as you like. I was too poor to try them though.

  3. I’m a great fan of University Cycles, having become a regular. The owner is very good with bikes, but can have a bit of a er… traditional approach to customer service. If he likes you he’s friendly, he’ll do bits and pieces for free, cut prices and lend you stuff. However, other people have reported him being quite rude and unfriendly.

    • IME he’ll only be rude to you if he’s busy. But then I’m cute and female so possibly I get a different response!

He does also refuse to service bikes that weren’t bought from him if he’s busy.

My bike was from Cycle King on Mill Road, who seem to have a permanent sale on, and it’s perfectly bog standardly usable. They’re a bit of a box-shifting organisation though.

  4. i got mine and get it serviced by haywards, just round the corner from university cycles. they seem to be efficient and friendly, but if you want repairs you can’t drop it off on a saturday. dunno about prices, but seems ok to me.

      • I can’t believe somebody nicked that bike (must have been desperate to go somewhere) – I’m sure my Dad’s still got the one I used.

When you get your new “manly” bike, don’t forget to get some energy tablets to recover from your first journey (and I thought I was unfit).

And make sure you’ve got lights at both ends of the bike, wouldn’t want our names and addresses taken by the coppers again!
