  1. Only yesterday I was looking at the new conservatory that had appeared poking up over the fence thinking ‘they’re gonna get into trouble if that needs maintanance on that wall…lo and behold the next day there is a man maintaining the wall (or probably the glass sitting atop the wall) from my garden. Thing is I’d end up in so much trouble if I went and stood on a ladder in someone elses garden, but I guess you get used to that after a few years of doing it.

  2. >People no longer hold doors open or step aside or give up their seats or say ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ anymore.

They do here in Germany. I am always disappointed and embarrassed when I fly home for a weekend at how rude people are in England. It’s still home for me, but I know I view it through rose-tinted specs. It’s a rude awakening to see it how everyone else sees it!

    • Indeed, I had the same feeling returning from Tokyo, probably stronger in some ways since their entire society is based on being seen to be polite and tidy. In many ways I don’t fit in with that, but I’m getting to be more aware of how it would be possible to make things easier for everybody. I blame Thatcher for a lot of it – Whats in it for me? – but theres more to it than that.

  3. I’m not particularly bothered – he’s mostly harmless – and I don’t answer my door anyway, since whenever I do theres someone trying to sell me something.
Unless I’m expecting somebody, of course.
