Neil Hopcroft

A digital misfit

You stare at me like I need to be saved

By necessecity of having no funcitonal CD machines (except those in computers) I’ve just set up my record player – this one hasn’t rotted after years of storage like the last one did (I think, now, that it was just the drive belt but I didn’t consider that until after I’d bought another deck).

The amp is still a little uncontrollable (no_sound, no_sound, little_sound, *VERY_LOUD_INDEED*, I’ve never turned up over ‘3’ ‘cos my ears couldn’t stand that and the little ‘overload’ lights flash in rather a alarming way), but my god, does rock sound good straight from the vinyl! Someone tell my why I got converted to those little shiny disks?

  1. Ooooh, Def Leppard so thick you could chew it, just like the band themselves. Story of my teenage years that was :)

I’ve got all my old vinyl here and I keep meaning to get rid of it.. doubt there’s anything you’re interested in though :)

    • Soundgarden, actually. I never really got on that well with the album, its a bit generic, but Jesus Christ Pose is a great track….not got much Leppard, just Hysteria, which I thought was a touch overproduced.

Give me a shout before getting rid of vinyl, my tastes are eclectic enough that theres bound to be something I’d buy…

  2. Indeed, I did something slightly similar last night… packed away my trusty 12 year old cheap Tandy all-in-one, and set up the various bits (amp/CD/record player) I’ve borrowed from while he’s away travelling.

One channel on the amp seemed knackered – no_sound, no_sound, no_sound, little_sound, no_sound. Vigorously turning the volume wheel back and forth for five minutes (all the way, so best to do it with the thing switched off :) seems to have cleaned off the contacts and sorted it out nicely.

    • I think my amp was designed before I was born – speaker technology has come a long way since then. Or it might have been designed by a deaf, but very enthusiastic, person.
