    • Well, I won’t tell anyone you said that…and, yes, she’s fairly cute…but the concept of the film is what will make me go see it. Honest.

  1. “Our version may have different cultures and settings but it’s still about people marrying from different backgrounds.”

I’m unconvinced by this argument – Mr. Bennet is a gentleman, as are Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley (there’s even an argument on this point between Eliza Bennet and Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy’s aunt). The whole story’s about the importance of acquiring wealth by marriage. Austin is wonderfully cynical…

    • They may all be gentlemen, but nevertheless their backgrounds are quite different. Austin does however apply criticism even-handedly in both directions: Lizzy’s mother and younger sisters are unbearably vulgar, but so are Mr Darcy’s female friends and relations! Both parties have to put up with ghastly in-laws in order to be with each other. It’s very nice that the condescension is not all on one side – Lizzy is rescuing Darcy from a miserable life just as much as he is rescuing her from poverty and intellectual isolation.

I quite like the sound of the Bollywood film: P&P is a corking, timeless story and I could see it working in all sorts of settings.

BTW, I have a real soft spot for the B&W film version, in which a short scene is inserted between Darcy and Lady Catharine which gives a pleasing twist to her character :) It’s not what Austin intended, but makes me smile every time.

    • Only if you’re viewing it through cynical eyes….its a beautiful romance, a story that can be told in so many ways, it would be an unusual woman to seek to marry for money…

    Sacrilege!!!

Austen is my all time fave author.. the wit and humour is very very subtle but most rewarding. Putting song and dance routines as part of the narrative. streuth!! The director needs to be shot!!!

Sacrilege, maybe, but one I need to see. Either it will work wonderfully or it will be dreadful, and from the clips I’ve seen I think I’ll enjoy it. But I’m not really a hardcore romantic, so hardly qualified to comment on its merits.
