FBI urges police to watch for people carrying almanacs

“WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying almanacs, cautioning that the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning…The FBI noted that use of almanacs or maps may be innocent, ‘the product of legitimate recreational or commercial activities.'”

I assume this was issued as a serious warning? What is going on here? Anyone who is stopped for a routine traffic check who is found to have a map in their car opens themselves up for suspiscion?

Lets ask ourselves a question – is it worth it? Is this level of paranoia worth the invasion into our lives? What happens if we’re not this paranoid?

I wonder if this paranoia is a reflection of nervousness on the part of the leadship of US? They don’t believe in themselves. They are in a position where they have a lot to lose. So they are defending themselves by clamping down on ‘terrorist-like behaviour’. Perhaps what should be happening is for someone to ask themselves, “Why would people want to attack us?” Sure, you have to believe your opponent is irrational, if he were rational he would behave how we expect him to, and he isn’t behaving that way.

Time to read the Unabomber Manifesto.

    • Yes, the start is a bit odd:

      – society must be destroyed
      – this is not a political paper
      – lefties are scum, destroying our society

…but if you wade through the complete misunderstanding of ‘leftists’ there are actually some interesting, well, thought provoking points raised afterwards. I’m not sure I agree with all the points (in fact I’m pretty sure I don’t) but they seem to be a reasonable worldview, if a little hung up on academia.

  1. apparently, in the US if you make a verbal threat to kill someone you can be arrested on terrorist charges. i am pretty sure the US government has lost it.

    • Theoretically you can in the UK too, depending on how your threat is made it could be considered conspiracy. Conspiracy offences always carry bigger sentences than the things themselves – that way the worse offence is committed before the act itself, which gives at least a fighting chance that the act can be prevented in some cases.

      • it actuall happens in the states tho. and because terrorism is so serious bail is 50,000 USD plus. its just silly…
tho i agree that its good that the kill itself can in some cases be prevented, there is a lot of room for that to be abused ;/

  2. Amerika-jin arimasen!

Indeed, but I kinda feel that if our cousins in the States have to suffer the indignity of getting lost all the time it somehow affects me too. Maybe not directly but theres an implicit assumption that UK law enforcement will make, and they won’t make it known to the public in the same way.
