A digital misfit

I’m so tall, I’m so tall

kayteanease‘s live tonight. Conveniently someone at the office booked me in for an important meeting until 6.30, but I made my excuses and left early.

The venue is not far from the office, I can see I’ll be heading back there again, I’ll have to keep an eye on whats going on there. This is another basement venue, but at least its got headroom. Not that anyone in the crowd needed it – I felt about a foot taller than everyone else there. So I got a good view without having to constantly dart to see over the shoulder of the person with the big hair or silly hat, my regular gig dance.

The first band were \m/ rock, the mood for the evening. They were in no other way notable. Between the bands was a ‘dj’, who was more of a person who played mp3s back to back, he wore a suit/facemask and a daft vocal effect, but I wouldn’t have understood a word anyway so that seemed unnecessary. It seemed for a while that the gremlin gaffer taped to his mic stand was doing the talking, but that must just have been some rock and roll fetish gone horribly wrong.

Once again the audience didn’t make much sense – it was mainly girls, the ratio hitting about 10:1 at its height – which is fine by me but also confusing, don’t guys here rock? Sure theres a few rock star guys, but I guess they’re mainly in it for the girls.

Kayteas band are next up. They come on stage, the singer wearing a god-awful baseball cap that has been designed to be worn sideways – another fashion disaster area. They launch into a hip-hop/metal fusion song, kinda like Clawfinger, but much worse. Dammit, I’m gonna hate this gig and never turn up to one again and Kaytea is going to hate me forever.

Thankfully, they saw the light and played some really rather decent rock music for the rest of the set, except for a little hip-hop interlude which I couldn’t figure out. Kayteas bass playing was good, lots of nice intricate stuff going on there, but a bit lost in the mix and drowned under guitar. A few more gigs and they’ll be taking the country by storm. Well, I’ll go and see them again anyway, but I’ll turn up late next time in hope of missing the first song.

The rest of the evening we flip between bands on stage and the gremlin dj. Most of the bands were at least listenable, the final one of the evening being quite good, they started out with heavily distorted vocals and a groovy drum beat, then tortured their guitars for forty minutes. Its easy to see how this scene spawned a band like Zeni Geva (“We are wyld starrions”).

Sadly I didn’t get much of a chance to talk to either Kaytea or rosiaconite – maybe another time, and maybe I’ll be brave enough to introduce myself to Rosis cute friend…
