  1. you got one too?

I was handed one just before christmas and told that it was my replacement laptop, and could i hand my old one back in please (dell lat c640)

What do you think of it? I thought it was ok in an emergency, or for travelling, or as a media player, but as a full time laptop replacement, i don’t think so.

    • It would certainly be a disappointment as a replacement for a laptop – but my intention is to have a machine that is suitable for carrying about a lot, especially for train journeys (daily commute), so weight and battery life were two considerations. If I need performance I use the machine at home.

Impression so far is that it is going to perform the role I intended, but I’m not exactly expecting to be churning out KLOCs on the rails…

      • yeah, that sounds more like the use i’d but for it, when travelling on a commute and you don’t want to be lumbered with a big heavy laptop and all assorted paraphanalia. I get about 2 and a half hours from the battery, which isn’t bad. That’s with wireless and bluetooth turned on, and screen at their default brightness. We got ours with the organiser case and keyboard, adds a bit to the size, but the keyboard is more than adequate for spodding/LJ, and the organiser bit has a stand on the back so it folds out into an almost laptop like stance. Dunno how much extra that was though.

        • Yes, I got that case/keyboard too, I’ve not bothered with it so far, except to plug in the keyboard at home because the touchscreen keypad is irritating for lots of typing.

Battery is certainly better than the beaten up lappy I had before (which managed about ten minutes), and the weight is far more conducive to daily carrying.

The plan is that the next lappy is an Apple, just because I’ve never lived with one day to day (the mini has never been anything more than a fascinating toy), but this is a nice tide-me-over generally useful box that is convenient for carting about.
