A digital misfit

    • The Landmark Forum is an organisation offering selfimprovement courses.

A couple of my friends have gotten involved, and while it has done them some good I was (and am still) resistant to it. But couldn’t work out why. Is it me being avoidant, or is it really a cult of some kind? I found a site claiming to expose it as a cult, and just wondered what everyone else thought of it.

More importantly, is there some way I can get the benefits it offers to others without the danger of the cult-i-ness of it?

  1. I think they’re sort of ok in a “reprogramming you to be a more effective person” sort of way. :-)

Their selling tactics leave a bit to be desired too. Ingaborg’s ex boss was very into it and one of the goals they set him was to recruit new people…

I find any kind of cultish behaviour repellant so I’d never go for it myself, but I’m prepared to concede that they may be of some benefit to people who need to be motivated…

  2. It worries me.

I’m sure in many cases it can be enormously helpful. However, for other people who suffer perhaps from low self esteem or have other psychological issues I suspect it could be damaging. The really worrying thing is that as far as I can see the people running these sessions have no background in psychology or training in counselling and are therefore unlikely to be able to tell the difference.
